Herbal Park initiative

Aims:

• • To make the medicinal plants available to people, there by low cost and alternative health measures are in place.
• Awareness in the people should be created on Indian traditional medicine.
• To increase the greenery, as medicinal plants increases the ownership.
• To use the indigenous plants in the parks replacing the foreign and vicious plants.
• To establish the nurseries involving the poor women and generating employment for them.
• Park should create the heeling effect in addition to aesthetic value.
• To create model for emulation in all the Urban Local Bodies.

Activity:

Initially the compound wall of the Indira Park is restored under the Parks and Playgrounds scheme. The walking paths are also established. The earlier crotan plants are removed. It is aimed to have a herbal park .The plants are collected in the following way:
Addasaram and shatavari plants are provided by sri.Suresh Jakotia, an ayurvedic doctor hailing from kodad. The rest of the plants are taken from the compost yard of suryapet municipality.
The following saplings are planted.
Addasaram (400 plants), lemon gross (100 plants), Alovera, Shatavari, Alastonia, Ranapala (50 plants), Pipal, Neem, Tulasi, almond, oma(vamu) Nalleru (quadrus rectangulus), Usiri (5 plants), mehandi (100 plants),vavili,etc.

At later stages,new plants are brought from the Nalgonda territorial nursery and social forestry and planted are as follows:
Territorial-Jeedi,teni, arjuna.
Social forestry- red sanders, maredu,bamboo.

The plants that are brought from the K.v.k.gaddipalli are as follows:
Kolias, Machipatri, vasa, dumparastram,turmeric,etc.

On 24th October, 2011, one block is filled with rose and all the following flowering plants in other block, which also have medicinal values, are as follows:

Hibiscus (2 varieties), satyanarayana plant(2 varieties),chemanthi(3 varieties),night queen, malle,krisna tulasi, devakanchanam, small amla. One small block of guntagaragara is also planted on the same day. After the above plantation, the rain has visited the suryapet as usual, which increased the sustainability opportunities of plants.

Again sri.Suresh Jakotia has come to rescue and sent more than 15 varieties of seeds to take up plantation. They are as follows:
chitrakamulam, nilaxani, single seed garlic(Kashmir variety), madhavilatha, dhathura,ashwagandha, ramaphalam,guriginja, vruddhadharu, bixia(hanuman sindhuri), Jammi.

The nutritional plants such as curry leaves, drumstick, almond, jamun, and guava are also planted.

In the later stages, training is conducted to poor women in propagation of medicinal plants and preparation of traditional medicines, so as to bring awareness in Ayurveda with the help of Aurabindo training centre, Gaddipally. The school children are also invited to have a look at it and emulate the same in their back yard. Some plants are distributed for propagation to the interested. In the recent past, the wet waste generated out of it is converting in to the vermin compost in the same park in a de-centralized way.

Specialties:

• The crotans are thoroughly removed and replaced with addasaram.
• It would be filled with all the herbal plants in future also.
• The propagation of the most of the plants is very easy, there by cause increment in greenery.
• Neem and papal are planted jointly as both together will give healing air, with maximum quantity of oxygen.
• In addition to this, the old plants were also protected or relocated.Those are as follows:
Thippa tega, ratnapur plant, shankapushpi,parijatham, sampenga, avise.

Outcomes:
• Many people from other places are also visiting to know and have some plants.
• It increased the greenery in town.
• It imparted the knowledge of alternate medicine amongst poor.
• Bio-diversity is upkeep.
• It exhibited that ayurvedic plants can be used as ornamental plants.
• News papers expressed it as model for emulation.

Pro-poor policies in water supply


Aim: The poor shall not suffer with spiraling price rises. He is the priority of the Government. His needs should be catered in the Urban Planning and governance.

Activity: The tap connections were given to poor people on low cost (donations), which were higher earlier and modified as per the instructions of the Government. The connections given @1200 are 2474 in number. The connections given @200 are 2799 in number. Giving the connections to poor is taken up in true spirit.

All the slum areas are connected with the water supply pipe lines. The duration of supply of water is on par with the non-slum areas.The construction of tanks are also taken near to the poor localities.

Government has instructed to run the water supply on no loss and no profit basis. The tariff has to be increased. But poor cannot bare much burden. Hence, only 20 rupees per month is increased from 60 Rupees. Where as tariff for poor is 100 rupees per month.

For the benefit of poor, single day disposal of tap connections are initiated in Indiramma colony. From the clerk to commissioner and chairperson was sitting on the same table and disposing the applications accordingly on the same day in the locality of the beneficiaries.

Three days earlier to the programme, an IEC campaign was conducted with the help of local plumbers to submit the applications of the residents. The Building license surveyors are also summoned to sketch the drawings expeditiously and without expecting much from the poor people. This made the things easier for all the poor people in accommodating in the new colony. They need pray or beg or represent from table to table at least for 15 days, which is prescribed under the citizen charter.



Outcomes:


• Quality water is available to poor on low cost. Otherwise, the expenditure on purchase of water would go up.
• It also ensures the health of the poor, as water is source of many ill- healths.
• The saved money can be spent on other activities such as education, nutrition, etc.
• It has over all impact on the quality life of poor.

One shot many birds


Background: What would cater the nutritional needs of the poor people perennially? It is the question raised by commissioner after implementing the kitchen gardens, consequent to spiraling price rise of vegetables. Many people are not able to eat two curries a day. The hybrid seeds are short lived, giving a lot of gap in between. Also the seeds can not be gifted continuously. Which plant give more yield and

Similarly, How to decrease the plastic material in the hotels and Tiffin centers? How to decrease the cost of leaflets to increase the consumption? How to stop the transportation to some extent of them from far off places?

How to protect the environment by adding economic value to plants? How to enthuse the poor people to participate in the environmental protection activities? How to generate income in selling the seedlings easily? Where the propagation of seedlings is easier and faster?

How to stop the water logging in the areas like suryapet, where more tanks are exists in the town?

All the above questions are answered with a single plant that is Banana (curry variety).

Sponsors: Once again the “Council for Green Revolution” has come to the rescue of Suryapet Municipality and provided 2000 Banana plants, in addition to 1000 other nutritional and ornamental plants. These plants were brought from Kadium Nursery. The transportation is provided once again by Meela satyanarayana, ex-chairperson, suryapet Municipality.

Activity:
The poor areas are selected, so as distribute the plants in clusters such as Indiramma colony, B.V.Colony,sainikpuri,etc. This enables to cut down leafs to supply them to the intended hotels, etc. In the selection process, the water logging areas and areas around the tanks are also given priority. The areas around the hotels are also given the priority to easy transport. Some philanthropic persons and organizations are also given banana plants, so as to supply the seedlings easily.

Superstition:
There were myths among the people that whether banana plant can be had in front of the house as it is told to be harmful by elders. Commissioner has to explain that he has banana plants in his house and nothing has happened. Some people have their homes in banana farms and they are becoming millionaires. Many people use banana plants in every day prayer. If nothing is happened to them, nothing would happen to us also.

Expected outcomes:


• Consumption of plastic would go down with the easily available banana leafs locally.
• The pollution of transportation of leaves would be also go down from far off places.
• Environment is protected with more number of plant populations.
• It would continuously increase the greenery in surrounding areas.
• Mosquito population would go down with decrease in water logging.
• It would provide additional curry for many poor with low cost and it would show impact on prices of vegetables.
• Nutritional levels of many poor would be increased.

Initiative of Kitchen gardens in Suryapet Municipality

Back Ground: In olden days every household use to grow vegetable in their backyard. Due to urbanization, the situation has been changed a lot. Even though there is ample choice to grow the vegetable plants, people do not prefer to grow vegetables for various reasons.

The spiraling price rise of vegetable due to extended rains in the December, 2010 has made the some of the vegetables Rupees 50 per kilogram. It was expected that it would reach 80 Rupees per kilogram during the summer. It would increase the poverty in terms of nutritional intake, as every urban person has to take 2100 kilo calories per a day.

During the oral inquiry in meetings, Self Help Group members in November, 2009, 10% to 20% use to answer that they are taking 2 curries in a day in meals. In January, 2011 the situation is entirely different and middle class has also shifted to single curry in a day. Already 47% Indians are suffering from the Anemia, though the poverty stood at about 30%.If the same situation of low vegetable intake continues, the Anemia rate goes up. It would raise all the deceases and particularly I.M.R and M.M.R.

For the sustainable towns, the production from that town should be 25%, from surrounding areas 50% and 25% shall be imported from long distances. But the situation in most of the urban areas including the Suryapet is altogether different. Not even 10% is produced in the town, only 25% comes from surrounding areas, remaining has to be imported from much distance. This is causing heavy transportation charges and many mediators. Thus, it is cause of spiraling prices and pollution.

Suryapet municipality has planted about 60,000 plants in last 14 months, including 13000 nutritional plants and 15,000 medicinal plants.

After rainy season, Suryapet Municipality has to take up medicinal plants. In continuation to the efforts and to make the town greener, it is to take up Kitchen garden, to make it an integrated activity and for the benefit of the town people.


Choosing the vegetables:

The meeting of horticulture officer, seed distributor and core staff is convened to select the vegetables to be propagated. Basing on the advantages of process, yield, nutritional value, suitability, etc., the following is chosen:
The climbers use to give more yields. Hence, 3) climbers namely gourd, bitter gourd, and beera are chosen. The gourd has ability to decrease the obesity by acting on the fat and by decreasing the hunger. The calorific value of the vegetable is also less.

The bitter gourd has many medicinal values including the prevention and mitigation of diabetes.The beera has very good
In order to increase Iron content amongst the poor one leafy vegetable by name (thota koora in telugu) is selected.

There is no need of much pain in sowing or we need much space, we can directly plants the seeds and tie a wire or rope to reach the climbers on to the top of their house. The requirement of space to propagate the climbers is only 3 sq. yds only.

Sustainability of Bitter gourd is for about one year and thota koora is for more than 2 years.The hybrid variety of seeds is chosen and average yield starting period is 6 weeks.


Mobilization strategy:

Meeting of SLF leaders are convened and discussed in elaborate about nutritional deficiency and spiraling price rise. The only remedy is only kitchen gardens. It was also informed that Govt. or municipality would be providing seed kits at 50 % subsidy.
Consequently, the meeting of Resource persons is also convened to motivate them to work as anchor persons. All the concepts are elucidated. It was ensured that some how the seed kits would be made available at 10/- only
Subsequently, the joint meeting of staff and seed distributors is convened. The price of seed kit is fixed at 20/- and it shall be supplied to the poor at 10/- either by collecting the subsidy from the philanthropists or drawing it from the Govt. 5 Grs. Each of 4 varieties of seeds would be provided and one variety of leafy vegetable would be 50 Grs. The staff is imparted the concept and importance of Kitchen gardens to the poor. It was also requested to make the initiative success.The total initial requirement is fixed at 5,000 kits. The total amount required for seed kits is Rs. 50,000/-

To enhance, more subsidies to people, philanthropic persons, NGOs, unions are also invited and requested for their contribution in men and material for implementation and supervision. Municipality has also resolved to supply the Vermi compost at 50% subsidy to these vegetable growers.


Activity:

There is presence of ward officers in Suryapet municipality. The responsibility of heading the task would be given to these officers, starting from motivating to take up the kitchen gardens to disbursement of seeds and bio-fertilizer. The resource person is the real head to head the project. She motivates the poor SHG Women and elucidates the advantages of the kitchen gardens to take it up.She also monitors the process of rearing.



The total town and activity areas would be divided in to 50 clusters consisting of 100 houses for the administrative convenience. The responsibility is given to concerned person for all the activities.


Advantage of Kitchen Gardens:

1. Improves the income and reduce the poverty of poor house holds.
2. Fresh and nutritious food is available and improves health. It also reduces the load on the fridges, as there is no need of storing the vegetables.
3. Climbers provide cool atmosphere in the house and reduces energy charges.
4. If every body takes up vegetable plantation, more food is produced and food is assured making it easily available and cheaper.
5. It also contributes to curtailing the Global Warming.
6. Fresh air would be available in surroundings.
7. Leafy vegetables can solve the problem of anemia and other nutritional problems.
8. Water harvesting use to take place and all the advantages of Greenery also realize with it.
9. Kitchen Gardens have a greater say in increasing per-capita income, average life expectancy. It decreases Infant Mortality, Mother Mortality Rate and improves health indices.
10. Other poor people can be provided food from excessive produce and it paves way for dependent life, which gives immense pleasure.
11. Need not go out side to buy the vegetables and it saves the valuable time and fuel.


.Achieving Millennium Development Goals

• Reduce the poverty and hunger of poor house holds.
• Improves the income and reduce the ill health, there by contribute for the primary education of poor people.
• As the women under the network of SHGs grow the kitchen gardens and they have greater say in the home and they are empowered.
• As the availability of nutritious food increases to women and children, the IMR and MMR reduce.
• Similar with maternal health.
• As the nutrition increases, the immunity power also increases.

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

About Suryapet Municipality
Suryapet Municipality is a first Grade municipality in Nalgonda District of Andhra Pradesh and spread over 24 sq km. Suryapet urban town was constituted during the year 1952, as Grade - III municipality. Municipality has 34 no. of election wards, 3 no. of Revenue wards.
 The town has 269 km of roads (includes 158 km of cement roads, 43 km of BT roads, 68 km WBM roads)
 The drains expanded to 340.5 km by covering total town (includes 198.5 km pucca drains, 142 km of storm water drains)
 Developed the greenery by plantation in the town preferably in houses, schools, colleges, burial grounds, agricultural market, edga, and parks.
Town Profile :-
Population (2011) - 1.05 Lakhs
Area - 24 sq km.
Total Number of households – 25,000
Waste generated - 62 tonnes per day

Initiation:-

As all of us know that Man is a Social Animal from the time immemorial. The Modern Man is NOT an exception. Thus, right from the ‘Cradle to Grave’, his every activity is linked-up with the Society. In that process, he is bound to cause certain Social problems. One of such most important one is the sanitation. Its severity depends upon the Density of the Population lives together in that particular Area.
If this Sanitation problem is Under-looked OR Over-looked, it is bound to cause grave Health Hazards to that very Society, itself. To over-come this problem, the Social Sanitation (including Personal Hygiene) should be dealt with, with Utmost Care & Proper In-depth understanding. As it is the Social problem, the entire burden lies with the collective Responsibility, RATHER THAN ‘individual’ one. In this respect, the Urban Local Self-Government Institutions (viz: Municipalities and Corporations etc.,) had an ‘indispensible Role’ to play, in their respective jurisdictions.
Take the Example of Town Municipality, Suryapet of Dist. Nalgonda. It has taken number of precautionary measures for Solid Waste Management, prescribed in SWM Rules, 2000, right from the Year 2002. It has spread this Message, by successfully educating the Town Public, through frequent Periodical Informal Meetings, with local Educational Institutions, Traders Societies & Women Organizations etc., Even the College & School-going Children, Parents Committees too were covered through wider Mike Publicities.
Several Sanitation Tractors were also pressed into Service, with Trained , Committed Sanity Staff & Supervisors, for collecting the Domestic Solid & Liquid Wastes (both Wet & Dry), from all Residential Houses through periodical punctual Door Visits. The active Co-operation of all the Town Residents is the Concrete Proof to brand this Programme as ‘GRAND SUCCESS’, which is firsts of its kind in Surya Peta Town.
The back-drop History of this Town Municipality, Suryapet with the steps taken in this direction, are as follows, in brief:
1. The Programme was first initiated by Sri Md. Khader Sahib, the-then-Commissioner, after convincing the-then-Sitting Municipal Council. Since then, it is being continued further, still more vigorously.

2. Successfully conducted wide-ranging Inculcative Meetings with the available Self-Help Groups.

3. Successfully deployed required additional Field Staff, with vehicles, as per need of the hour.

4. Systematically removed all the existing Dust Bins, serially from Street after Street, in the Town.

5. Sri Meela Satya Narayana, Eminent Local Industrialist, Freedom Fighter, ex-Chairman of the Municipality, distributed new Bins for segregation of the Waste, in the Town.

6. Planned to phase-out all the existing Dust Bins, as & when the cent per cent results are achieved, in respect of house-to-house Garbage Collection is achieved.

7. Announced Incentives & Dis-incentives (Fines) to Co-operative & non-co-operative people, respectively.

8. Took-up large-scale Informative Media Activities, in all Slums & Plain Areas of the Town, through the exhibition of Videos, Short Movies, Slides, Banners, and distribution of Pamphlets etc., on the subject.
9. Successfully, stepped-up the Supervisory Activities, at every Stage, for rectification of defects found, if any.

10. Fully prepared to receive any positive suggestions & constructive criticism, from any quarter, in the public interest.

11. Successfully conducted Essay Writing & Rangoli Competitions among School, College-going Students, & House-wives on the Street Roads, in the Town, on the Subject, respectively.

12. Successfully strengthened the Drianage Net-work to the needy efficient level, coupled with the regular supervisory visits of Sanitary Inspectors to mend the non-co-operators, in the Town.

13. Successfully stressed the principle of “collective Work System” for the success of Garbage Collection Campaign, in the minds of all the connected Staff.

14. Successfully shifted the Vermi Compost Processing Yard (including the Sale Process of Dry Waste) to present Jamuna Nagar site, from the previous Ambedkar Nagar to over-come the space problem. The required Earth Worms are imported from Khammam Town.

This Municipality was Awarded with ISO Certificate (No.14001 – 2004) for the successful implementation of this Programme in the Year 2004, itself. Late Sri YS Raja Sekhar Reddy, the-then-Chief Minister too Awarded a Cash Prize of Rs.25, 00,000/- in the same Year, for this achievement. Late Sri Koneru Ranga Rao, the-then-Minister for Municipal Administration., also Awarded Prizes to this Municipality, for this unique success.

This Role Model Municipality also stood-up as Centre of Attraction for Visits of several Political Leaders, Groups, Representatives of other similar Institutions and Voluntary Organizations, Officers and Eminent Personalities, from both National & International Levels, for conducting on-the-Spot Studies.
This Municipality also is gaining some financial benefits through this collected Solid Wastage (both Dry & Wet) by using them as ingredients in manufacturing Plastic Carry Bags, Paper Bundles and Vermi Composts, respectively.
All this success is the direct result of Town Public’s matured Awareness, Co-operation of Voluntary Organizations, Town Elders, Right-thinking Citizens and Co-ordination & Sincerity on the part of Municipal Staff.


Primary Waste Collection :-
The entire town is divided into 7 sanitary circles. Collection of solid waste in residential area is started by 6:00 am with 13 tractors, 4 autos. i.e, 25,000 households in the year 2011. Every day one separated vehicle was exclusively allotted for waste collection from chicken shops & Hospital waste between 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm. There is also separate vehicle for the collection of dry waste in the commercial areas. This dry waste collection process is getting done by an outsourcing agency. There is also separate vehicle for collection of wet waste.In the slum areas the source segregation of waste is being done.

Composting Yard :-
The recycle unit or (compost yard) is at the distance of 10km from the town. It has 3 composting sheds and 1 recycling shed of 10’’ x 40’’ .

Composting of Organic Waste :-
Composting process involves following three steps
1. Segregation of Waste
2. Decomposition of the waste through composting methods
3. Seweing, packing for marketing
Suryapet Municipality is using vermi-composting method to process the wet garbage. The first step in this process is collecting the organic garbage separately from households, vegetable, fruit markets. Most important requirement for composting is separation of non-bio degradable waste, like glass, plastic, metals etc. Separation is done by at the source only.
Collected wet waste is composting naturally for a period of one month, twice a day water is spraying on the wet waste and turns the waste decomposed to small pieces. When the large pieces of bio-degradable material is available, the same is pulverized to make in to small pieces, so as make it compostable in less time.
This composted material is formed in to beds and moisture is maintained by spraying water once a day. After 15 to 20 days till the bed is decomposed completely then we will get valuable fertilizer vermi- compost. The earth worms are left into those bed sand vermi compost beds.
Dry waste collected from commercial areas like paper, plastic etc., is separated in recycling shed and this waste is binded with a plastic rope wire into 30 kg to 40 kg bundles are sold to paper recycles.
Bio medical waste from hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and chicken waste is collecting separately in tractor and burying the waste safely in compost yard.
Plastic reduction:
Municipal council has taken decision to minimize the usage of plastic. The following ways are adopted for the same.
1. Incentives
2. IEC
3. alternatives
4. fining

 Incentives: The kirana and merchant association was asked to give incentive of 1/- to 5/- basing on the material purchased, when carry in a bag. It also saves a lot amount on purchase of plastic carry bags to shop owner. Similarly, chicken and mutton shop owners are requested to extend incentive of 2/- on purchase of meat. The hotel owners are requested to give incentive of 2/- on each plate of tiffin , when consumers carry it in a box. All of them have implemented as it saves environment in addition to valuable money to them.

 IEC: The disadvantages are widely informed, communicated and educated the ill affects. posters are prepared and displayed in all the important places. Meetings are convened with all important sections of the town. They are as follows:

o Excessive use of plastic would cause cancers and neuro problems.
o Human beings do not have capacity to digest the plastic. Consumption of it would cause stomach-ache.
o It would stagnates water and cause the floods in cities like viziawada and Mumbai. Also create the mosquito breeding centres, especially aedis egypty, which cause dengue, chikun gunya.
o It causes the decrement in the sperm count and ovary count , which causes the infertility.
o The carcinogenic gases emanated out of burning the plastic would cause the unwanted hair in women and many other health ailments.
o It would pollute the water bodies and cause of aquatic animals.
o It does not allow the water to percolate in to earth.
o It decrease the fertility of the soil, there by become problem for food security.
o It is causing the death of valuable animals.
 Alternatives:
The paper, jute, glass and metals are the alternatives. The same is provided to the people. Some people are trained to prepare the paper bags. Slowly some people started using the paper bags.
o The non-woven cloth bags and cloth bags are given at some places at free of cost. At later stages they are distributed at low cost.
o Tea Hotels were asked to use only paper glasses instead of plastic tea cups. They accepted and the usage is continuing.
o Sai baba temple was motivated to distribute its prasadam in the paper. They accepted and the usage is continuing. Similarly, venkateshwara temple was motivated by a N.G.O. to use alternate material.
o Function hall were motivated to use paper glasses and reusable plates.

 Fines: Most of the people listened to the requests of the staff of suryapet Municipality. When they did not listen, municipality has fined them in regular intervals.

Lake Water Conservation




The lake water conservation cum rain water harvesting has been taking place in all the (3) tanks in the Suryapet town namely Saddalcheruvu, Pullareddy Tank, Nalla Cheruvu. Bund was developed around two tanks out of three tanks. Sullage water of town was diverted from lake water. Sullage Treatment Plant would be constructed on the bank of Nalla Cheruvu. Due to this contamination of lake water is minimal and Ground water is also increased. Tree plantation near the tanks is also taken up to decrease the evaporation.

Tree plantation has been also taken up in the catchments areas of saddal cheruvu and pullareddy tank. It has increased the rains in those areas. Earlier, these tanks use to be filled with the musi river water. Presently, with out feeding, the tanks are filled with water.Last year block plantation was taken up in edga.The father of Loyola college was taken interest in plantation.This year plantation has been taken up in Loyola college by planting about 1300 plants in the available open place. 300 plants are planted in sneha nilayam.The rain recorded much in this areas.2000 teak plants are arranged to aravindaksha college for planting in the available open space, which is also in catchments area.

Total benefits accrued:

1) Level of ground water table was increased in town.
2) Water level in surrounding bore well was also increased.
3) Greenery around tanks and in the town was increased.
4) Contamination of water was minimized.
5) Fauna also increased around the lakes.It stimulated the bio-diversity.

Outputs and outcomes:
1) The encroachments in the lakes are arrested.
2) It protected the overall environment.
3) Bund constructed around the tanks is using as a bypass road from National High way to town. Because of this traffic on National High way is minimized.
4) Municipality wants to develop greenery around bund. Because of this it will become mini tank bund of Suryapet.

Second Year of Plantation

Suryapet municipality has continued its plantation in the second year continuously. It has started with the medicinal plantation in Indira Park, which is under renovation. The 62nd vanamahotsavam was also celebrated in style.26, 058 plants are planted in a single day. On the same day the commissioner of the Suryapet Municipality was given the award of vananestam. On his behalf sanitary inspector received the same. The details are as follows:

Medicinal Plantation in Indira Park: -

Addasaram and shatavari plants are provided by sri.Suresh Jakotia, an ayurvedic doctor hailing from kodad. The rest of the plants are taken from the compost yard of suryapet municipality. The following saplings are planted.
Addasaram (400 plants), lemon gross (100 plants), Alovera, Shatavari, Alastonia, Ranapala (50 plants), Pipal, Neem,Tulasi,almond,oma(vamu) Nalleru (quadrus rectangulus), Usiri (5 plants), mehandi (100 plants),vavili,etc.
The aims of the herbal garden are as follows:
• To make the medicinal plants available to people, there by low cost and alternative health measures are in place.
• To increase the greenery, as medicinal plants increases the ownership.
• To use the indigenous plants in the parks replacing the foreign and vicious plants.
• To establish the nurseries involving the poor women and generating employment for them.
• Park should create the heeling effect in addition to aesthetic value.
• To create model for emulation in all the Urban Local Bodies.


Specialties:
• The crotans are thoroughly removed and replaced with addasaram.
• It would be filled with all the herbal plants in future also.
• The propagation of the most of the plants are very easy, there by cause increment in greenery.
• Neem and papal are planted jointly as both together will give healing air, with maximum quantity of oxygen.

In addition to this, the old plants were also protected or relocated.Those are as follows:
Thippa tega, ratnapur plant, shankapushpi,parijatham, sampenga, avise.

At later stages,new plants are brought from the Nalgonda territorial nursery and social forestry and planted are as follows:
Territorial-Jeedi,teni, arjuna.
Social forestry- red sanders, maredu,bamboo.
The plants that are brought from the K.v.k.gaddipalli are as follows:
Kolias, Machipatri, vasa, dumparastram,turmeric,etc.

On 24th october,2011, one block is filled with rose and all the following flowering plants in other block, which also have medicinal values are as follows:
Hybiscus(2 varieties),satyanarayana plant(2 varieties),chemanthi(3 varieties),night queen, malle,krisna tulasi, devakanchanam, small amla. One small block of guntagaragara is also planted on the same day.After the above plantation, the rain has visited the suryapet as usual, which increased the sustainability opportunities of plants.

Again sri.Suresh Jakotia has come to rescue and sent more than 15 varieties of seeds to take up plantation.They are as follows:
chitrakamulam,nilaxani,single seed garlic(kashmir variety), madhavilatha, dhathura,ashwagandha, ramaphalam,guriginja,vruddhadharu, bixia(hanuman sindhuri),Jammi.

The nutritional plants such as cuury leaves,drumstick, almond, jamun, guva are also planted.

62 Vanamahostavam Program on 9th July, 2011, Suryapet Municipality has planted 26,058 saplings in 34 wards and vasavi club (100 plants), Snehanilayam (200 plants), RKLK college (50 plants), Gurukula Patashala (Girls) (55 plants), Layola College (1000 plants), Bhavitha College (33 Plants), Office Staff (1000 Plants), Kaburstan (60 plants), Sai Brundavaram Anatha Asramam (100 plants),SV college land and ladies hostel,hospital.

In this program Sri G. manohar (Revenue Divisional Officer), Sri. Jagannatha Rao (T. Sridar), Sri. Y. Srinivas, Forest Range Officer, Sri Satya Narayana, M.E.O, Prinivipal S.V. Degree & P.G College & Staff and head Master Z.P. School were also participated along with Sri.Bonagiri Srinivas,Municipal Commissioner and his staff.

In this program A.P.U.F.I.D.C, Hyderabad donated 2000 plants (Badam, Alstonia, Allaneredu, Vepa, beltoborm, kanuga). Municipality Brought papaya, guava Plants (3000 plants) from kadapatri, Ambativagee, 3000 teak plants from Munya Naik thanda, 3000 plants (teku 2000, Usiri 500, Munaga 400, Jamail-100) from Vallabapuram. 100 Kanuga plants from B. Madharam, (13,958 plants) from Gandhi Nagar Nursery (Teku-7,870, Usiri-2,015, Munaga-2,110) from forest nurseries.
The help of the district collector sri.N.Mukteshwar Rao, smt.Neethu Prasad,J.C, Sri.Purushottam, D.F.O,Shekher Reddy, Y.Srinivas,F.R.O, Venkateshwarlu,F.R.O and forest staff is amazing. The Hon’ble M.L.A. Sri.Dhamodhar Reddy has given his valuable suggestions for sustainability of plantation.

Specialties of programme:

• The entire staff of sanitation and water supply, except a few, has participated for two days.
• The Non-Governmental Organizations, NCC, NSS from SV College and Kamakshi engineering College has participated. Ex-Councilors have also participated.
• This time people have dug the pits in the most of the instances. It made the things easier.
• Sustainability and immediate yielding of drumstick, banana, teak, papaya and Gorintaku has motivated many poor people.
• Many people requested for more number of usufruct saplings. It shows the increased interest among people.
• Household plants are given priority due to its high sustainability.
• The plantation around the suryapet is also taken up.
• Planting has become a habit for both the people and staff of suryapet municipality. They achieved the goal despite many troubles such as absence of students, two days bundh for Telangana, and delay in transportation of plants.
• It has clearly revealed the team work of Suryapet Municipality and district administration.

Energy Saving

More the energy we use, more we are contributing for the carbon dioxide emission. There by we are contributing for Global Warming. Indian Coal Consists Considerable amount of sulpher. Excessive use of coal in thermal power stations results in acid rains and other environmental damages, ultimately leading to Global Warming and Climate change.

Municipalities have the capability of saving a lot of energy even up to 40%. The saving initiatives in Suryapet Municipality are as follows:

1. SUN SYNCHRONISATION:

Generally more than 30 minutes are wasted before sunset and after sunrise while switching on and off respectively. Instead of 11 hours lights are on for 12 hours. That means 9% of energy is being wasted without utilization. In case of some municipalities, it is much more than calculation.
After arrival of the present Commissioner B.Srinivas, more number of persons are deployed to switch off the lights. Staff also has shown great discipline by starting switching off at 5.30 a.m. at sharp.In the summer it is little earlier. Earlier the business of switching on was in the hands of electricity and in indiscipline manner. The responsibility was taken back in to the hands of Municipality. The switching on was systematized. It saved a lot of energy and saved the amount.


2. STANDARDIZATION:

It is natural habit of the public representatives to use higher luminescence of lights unnecessarily.

If not only drains the wealth of the municipalities on capital cost but also a constant drain on the energy costs. Such anomalies in the lighting should be discontinued.

SOL: As per the standardization chart supplied by BEE, Urban administrators should discontinue use of higher wattage luminaries. (See page for table as annexure).

In addition to this alternate Lighting of higher wattage of lights is proposed by the assistant engineer Sri.Rajkumar. The same is continued and saved a lot of energy and money.

USE OF 36W TUBES OR 28 W ELECTRONIC CHOKES:

Suryapet Municipality has purchased only 36 watt tube lights.It saves about 4 watts for each tube light. The Tube light fixture is available for almost same cost. Thus, saving a lot of energy.

3. PROVIDING FO MAIN LINES:

Due to lack of main lines, in most of the Municipalities, we hear and watch the glowing of lights for 24 hours. It wastes a lot of precious energy.

Even in absence of main lines Municipality has provided DP mains (Individual Switches). Even if municipal staff does not worry of switching on / off, At least a benevolent person takes care about it. In addition to this the proposals for 3rd wire was also sent to save the energy permanently.

4. ESTABLISHMENT OF MCB ‘S: There are no MCBs to switch on/off the lights. It use to waste the energy and short circuit use to take place very frequently. The MCBs are procured. The same is to be installed soon.

5. Starting the switching off operation from central lighting saves a lot of energy. Staff should is enlighten in the technicalities to enable to save energy and for sustenance of reforms.

6. USE OF CFL :

The CFL is also tested and proved that they are giving good illumination. In future the number has to be increased.
7. USE OF LED :

The LED lights are also tested. The illumination is good but its spreading is comparatively less.

The energy saving initiatives in the water supply is as follows:
1. FIXING OF CAPACITORS:

On fixing of capacitors to motors P.F. value of system improved and it also saved the energy. Many municipalities in A.P. have profited by installing capacitors. About 30% energy and money is saved through this initiative.


2. Direct Pumping:

Earlier the pumping use to be take place from Dosapahad(Nagarjun Sagar Left Canal) in two stages. Now it is proposed to do in single stage by installing the higher stage pumps, i.e.125 H.P. V.T. Pumps. It saves a lot of energy and money.

3. Gravity:

The Distribution use to be through pumping and consumes a lot of energy. The former chairperson sri.Meela Satyanarayana has formulated proposal for gravity distribution. The same is expedited and would be started soon, leading to saving energy and money.

4. POWER BORES:

Power bores are constant drain of energy and revenue of municipality without any realization. In some municipalities power bores are necessary during scarcity period. In 2009, Bore wells were used even after completion of Water Supply improvement Scheme. The present Commissioner has discontinued the Bore wells and saved a lot of energy and money.

Initiatives of Suryapet Municipality


Tree plantation in Suryapet Municipality


About 52,000 saplings have been planted during 2010.Another 10,000 plants are planted during 2011.There are various kinds of initiatives to accelerate the greenery.

Background
Suryapet is an eco- friendly town with a pioneering in the Solid Waste Management. During the 2009, the widening of National Highway no.9 was taking place. Many trees were cut down on that activity. There was need to have plants to have the ecological balance. There was appreciable quantity of greenery was present in Suryapet town.

Activity

Initially The Non-Governmental Organizations are contacted to take up the tree plantation activity. Vruksha Yagnam has come forward to co-operate with the Suryapet municipality. Hence, Sai vanam programme is initiated in January, 2010 in collaboration with NGOs named Vruksha Yagnam and Sai Seva Samithi Trust, Suryapet. It was inaugurated by the Chairperson sri.Meela Satyanarayana.

It is intended to supply the saplings to public at free of cost by collecting donations and exchanging the plants and seeds from philanthropic persons. On every Thursday devotees come to Sai baba temple. On that day various plants are arranged to them. On an average 200 plants per Thursday was distributed. In the April and May, the programme was discontinued, as the plant sustainability is low.

It continued for about 30 weeks. About 5000 plants and more than that seeds have been supplied to the people. It acted as Green Bank. Extra available seeds and seedlings are accepted from the available people and same was exchanged to needy persons. The receipt of material is thoroughly documented. It has given the impetus to greenery in Suryapet town. People have identified that the tree plantation is one of the priority items of Suryapet Municipality.
The utilization of plants was checked over the phone and by random personal visit. One exclusive person was kept to carry out the sai vanam activities to collect the plants, distribution, supervision, etc.from municipality.

In the month of January, 2010, about 40 medicinal plants were brought from KVK,Gaddipally and planted in the compost yard. It stimulated the extensive medicinal plantation in future in Suryapet Municipality. At a later date 200 more medicinal plants were also planted in Compost yard.

In the month of June, Govt. has announced the million plants day to be held on 16-07-2010. It is intended to increase the greenery in the state of A.P. The target of the Suryapet municipality was only 2,500 plants. A meeting was held under the chairmanship of the District Collector, Nalgonda Sri.S.A.M.Rizvi in the third week of June to take up the preparatory activities. Sri.B.Srinivas, Municipal Commissioner, Suryapet has requested to reallocate the target to 15,000 saplings to be planted on the Million Plants Day. District Administration has readily accepted for the same.The help of the sri.Srinivas,Forest Range Officer and Jayanth Babu in providing the plants is amazing.


Subsequently, Municipality has sought the help of the NCC and NSS Unit of SV Degree College for plantation on Million Plants Day. They readily accepted the proposal. Some public representatives, NGOs have expressed their readiness to participate. All the SHGs are mobilized to participate in the programme. Municipality identified the places of plantation well in advance and intimated to the forest department.

Municipality has deployed staff and NSS and NCC units on 15-07-2010. Tractors were sent to different nurseries in the district to collect the saplings. The pits were diged one day before to facilitate the process. The plants are stocked in the places to be planted and streets.

The plantation program was inaugurated by Sri.R.Dhamodar Reddy,M.L.A.,Suryapet.Municipal Chairperson,Municipal Commissioner,A.D.J.,R.D.O.,D.S.P.,C.I.,S.I.,Dy.F.R.O.,Market Secretaty,teachers, N.G.Os,i.e. Bhanupuri Paryavaran Parirakshana Samithi,Vruksha Yagnam,Lions Club,Vasavi club,Lions-spurthi,etc have participated.Edga, New Agriculture Market Committee, and Bhavitha College are with a lot of space and protection is also available in the form of wall. About 1000 saplings have been planted at each of these places on 16-07-2010. On the same day, 1575 saplings are planted at Compost Yard. Saplings are also planted at police station, lion’s eye hospital, public club. Forest department was kind enough to supply about 1000 tall plants, which assures the sustainability of plants.

At the instance of the District Collector and Hon’ble M.L.A., saplings are planted at available protected places in all the colleges and schools. A huge rally was organized on 16-7-2010 with students to motivate the plantation in the town under the guidance of Sri.Damodhar Reddy,M.L.A.,Suryapet.

Similarly, the spaces are available in the outskirt wards in households to take up the plantation in large scale. About 10000 plants have been planted in ward number 8, 11,12,13,14, and 22. To ensure the interest in the protection of plants by the public, the teak, drumstick, curry leaves, gorintaku plants are supplied. Many people have come forward to utilize the open spaces and cover it with greenery. All the details of plantation are documented thoroughly. At last the Suryapet Municipality has accessed and planted 23,000 plants on the Million Plants Day.

Bhavitha College under the leadership of Sri Maram Venkat Reddy has done the tremendous work in planting the 800 seedlings, out of which 300 are medicinal plants, in the open space available at their new campus. They have dug the trenches near the plants and allowed the waste water to pass through it. Thus, utilized the waste water generated from the hostel .It not only conserves the water but also improves the greenery without much effort.

The edga people have also evinced in protecting the plants. They drilled the borewell to water the plants regularly. The plants have grown taller. Municipality has also continuously monitored the growth of plants.

Similarly, Sri.Srinias, Secretary, Agricultural Market Committee has taken a lot of interest in saving the plants by making the protection arrangements and watering by allocating the persons exclusively for this purpose.

Subsequently, Suryapet Municipality has sought the help of Arthika Samatha Mandal , a NGO working for the welfare of the people in surrounding of Suryapet. They have brought the plants from kadium nursery but did not put to use. Commissioner, Suryapet Municipality has observed the tall plants and requested the Project Director to supply at subsidized cost. He accepted after long negotiation to supply the fruit bearing plants @ 10 rupees and agreed for reimbursing the amount after 6 months, if it is proved to be sustainable.

The poor SHG women were not coming forward to spare even 10 rupees per plant, who are intended group of supply. Donations are collected from the philanthropic groups and plants are made available for 5 rupees. Thus, fruit bearing plantation has been done in ward number 23, 12, 11, etc. The plants supplied are mango, sapota, lemon, pomegranate, etc.

Subsequently the organizations such as Agri gold and Vruksha Yagnam has distributed and planted the seedlings at free of cost. Agri gold alone planted 5000 seedlings on 26-7-2010, out of which 500 are fruit bearing plants. On the same day municipality has contributed 500 fruit bearing plants by collecting donations.

Municipality would like to take forward the fruit plantation by buying the plants at cheaper cost, as the free supply was stopped. About 2000 pomegranate plants were purchased by collecting the donations. Anjali school, Bhavitha college and Sri Venkateshwara chit Funds have given the donated the plants.

There were a lot of Greenery in the Households and open spaces. The question is that there were many roads and colonies left without plantation.Fortunately; APUFIDC has sanctioned the project of avenue plantation under Urban Forestry. The plantation has been taken up in newly developing Indiramma colony and other slum areas. About 2500 plants were planted on the roads. The people in the various localities were motivated to water the plants in front of their houses. The up keeping of plants was done by the agency appointed by the APUFIDC.

Subsequently, after watching the interest evinced by the Suryapet Municipality, the Council for Green Revolution has donated 4500 fruit plants and 500 flowering plants. The same was distributed to the SHGs. The most of the plants were given to poor people to bring down the anemia in addition to greenery. Adding the economic value to the plants would bring the ownership on plants and leads to sustainability to plants. The banana plants are used for absorbing the inundated water. It has great capacity to absorb the water.

Everywhere there was greenery in the town. Now the question was that why the commissioner is not evincing the interest to have some plants at municipal office premises. However, out of its own nursery the Ornamental plants are planted at municipal office premises, court guest house. This not only increased the greenery but also beautified the premises.

After the rainy season, the shrubs use to survive. So, the medicinal plantation was given the priority. The aim of this plantation is to provide the medicinal plants at free of cost to the entire town people with a special emphasis on poor and every house shall have at least 3 medicinal plants in their premises. About 10,000 nalleru(sizes Quadrangles) plants have been planted in the compost yard, slaughterhouse, marshy areas to ensure more quantity of oxygen, to avoid pollution and to make available the medicinal plants. The Oma, Aloevera, Tulasi are planted to an extent of 2,000 in different clusters.

Due to the extended rainy season in the month of December, 2010, the spiraling price rise of vegetables took place and it can be decreased only through the nutritional gardens. Ample open space is available in the peripheral areas of the town. Even plantation of climbers does not take much space. People are continuously motivated to take up the nutritional gardens during the meetings. The success of nutritional gardens lies in the quality of seed. Hence, the High Yielding Hybrid seeds were procured from Mahico. Seed kits are packed with 5 varieties of seeds consisting of 50 ladies finger seeds, 5gourd seeds, 5 bitter gourd, 5 beera and 50 grams of leafy vegetable. The price fixed was at 20/-. It was made available at 10/- only to poor people by collecting donations.
At a later date, concentration is kept on to the Bachali, an easily and cheaply available leafy climber vegetable. We get more than 500 seeds for only 5 rupees. This has got ample Iron content and can fight the anemia.

There shall be a special mention for compost yard plantation. Usually, the waste under processing use to emit the Green House Gases and it lead to many environmental consequences. Suryapet Municipality has planted very big plants in compost yard to an extent of 10% land as per the norms with the help of forest department. The upkeep of plantation for two years shall be done by them only. Earlier, along the boundary, chilla kampa is planted to work as biological fencing. It does not allow the animals to enter in to the compost yard. Even nutritional garden is also maintained for the benefit of the staff working in the yard. It not only maintains the greenery but also increases the levels of nutrition in the staff while working. About 200 plants are planted to avoid the bad odour. Millingtonia vriety, pongamia, pipal and neem are taken up for this purpose. Medicinal plantation has been taken up as illustrated earlier.

Forest department has planted the gacha teega as biological fencing along the border. The teak has been planted on the border. Bohemia and millingtonia is planned to plant to avoid bad smell at compost yard. The high oxygen giving pants of neem and pipal plants of big size are planted. On a single day on 16-7-2010 about 1575 plants are planted in compost yard to maintain the greenery as per the norms. Subsequently, about 1000 nalleru plants were planted to increase the oxygen percentage.

There shall be a special mention for rearing nurseries. In co-ordination with the Vruksha Yagnam schools, colleges are given the responsibility of rearing the nurseries. Heads of the institutions have come forward enthusiastically to rear the nurseries. Even Suryapet Municipality has maintained its own nurseries with help of same NGO. Hibiscus and ornamental plants are reared. The plants are supplied at free of cost to people, philanthropic organizations. The Sub-Jail, Suryapet has also reared the nurseries.


Results

• The sustainability of household plants is very high.
• The green coverage has increased in the town.
• The drumstick, banana, papaya and other hybrid varieties started yielding with in a span of 8 months. Food is made available to poor people.
• The climber vegetable plants have started yielding in only 45 days.
• The Ambient air quality in Suryapet town and compost yard are tested and proved with in the limits.
• The rains were increased in the town without flooding.
• The sustainability of tall plants is high.
• New birds were observed in Suryapet town.Butterflies,honey bees and other beings are increased in the town.
• The temperature has not gone up even after the cutting of trees on national high way widening.Night temperatures are decreased compared to other towns in the district
• People on their own have started planting and increased the greenery.
• Suryapet municipality has also distributed its own plants to surrounding villages.
• Many NGOs worked with the Suryapet municipality for protecting and propagating greenery.
• Waste water has been utilized for rearing the plants. Thus, water conservation has been done. It is taken up in the institutions and households too.


Lessons I learnt

• Any thing is possible with people’s participation
• Sustainability of avenue plants was low due to innocence of people.
• Sustainability of nalleru was also low, as no arrangements are made for protection.
• The persons monitoring the tree plantation is also low on the part of Suryapet Municipality.
• The dead plants at some points are not replaced with new plants.
• I failed to mobilize the tree guards to make the protection arrangements of avenue plants.
• The mini parks in front of houses have not been launched.
• The progress of medicinal plants was also tardy, due to many reasons.




Bio-Eradication of Mosquitoes – Gambusia initiative


I)Geographical Features of Suryapet:

The soil in and around the town is hard gravel soil. Elevation of the town varies from +169.00 meters to 184 meters above mean sea level. The natural slope of the town is from North to South. There are three tanks namely Pulla Reddy Tank, Chowdary Tank and Nallacheruvu Tank in the heart of the town. Musi left canal passes through the town from west to east irrigating fields in and around the town. The average ground water table is about 50’ below ground level.


II)Back Ground:
In 2003-04 Suryapet Municipality was at the pinnacle in managing the Solid Waste. Present Municipal Commissioner Sri.B.Srinivas too was one among them to visit the town. Astonishingly, there were many mosquitoes even during the day time. He asked the then commissioner that if it is the situation in the Suryapet, what about the worstly managed cities? The answer was that there were 3 tanks around the city of Suryapet and all the sullage water is reaching the tanks and they are the breading centers of Mosquitoes.
6 valuable years have passed; the mantle of Commissioner has reached into his hands in November, 2009. The No. of mosquitoes are increased and Dengue cases were also increased alarmingly and reached to 100 cases in the town. Even a person was also died.
Now, it is the responsibility of mc to eradicate mosquitoes. We have to spray the chemicals, do fogging under the culverts, dewatering, etc. Finally, MUNICIPAL COMMISSIONER recollected that while he was working at his native district they use to access the Gambusia fish either at Kadam dam or SRSP dam and leave them in stagnant waters to eradicate mosquitoes at larva stage.
This, in a small scale 5000 Gambusia fish is left into stagnant waters and tank waters in the month of January. Due to all the integrated efforts and atmospheric changes, Dengue cases were reported zero in a day.
In 2010, there were heavy rains in the state and Suryapet town is not an exception for that. The works of conservation of lakes was under progress. There were a lot of water was stagnant on the other side of bunds of Chowdary (saddula) Cheruvu and pullareddy tank. The water is also stagnant in storm water drain. The boon in disguise was that the constructions of Bunds to both the tanks were completed and dirty water was not reaching into the tanks.

III)Objectives of activity:

1. Eradication of mosquitoes in a biological way
2. Protecting the environment by arresting poisonous gases, by preventing the coils, mosquito killing chemicals, etc.
3. Arresting of Mosquito related deceases and ensuring the health of Suryapet town people.
4. Increasing the man days among the people and reducing the poverty.
5. Valuable money of people should be saved when they are protected from diseases such as Malaria, J.E., Chicken Gunya, and Dengue.
IV) Activity:
A meeting of all the Sanitary Jawans was called. It was instructed to identify all the stagnant waters in their respective zones. The information is obtained through the Sri.D.Sreenu,Sanitary Inspector, in the month of June itself.
MC instructed Sri Venkateshwarlu, Health Assistant to collect at least 25,000 Gambusia fish to leave in the stagnant water of the town to control Mosquitoes. Surprisingly he collected one lakh Gambusia fish in Hyderabad with the help of fisheries department and staff left them into tank waters, stagnant waters on the other side of the bund, stagnant waters of storm water drainage ( length 1.2 km ) and all the stagnant waters of the town. Fisheries department has helped Suryapet ULB a lot.
In the month of December, the rainy season extended to that month and new stagnant waters has arrived. Slowly the mosquitoes were on increase. Again we requested the fisheries officers to catch the Gambusia existing in the town to leave it into new waters. About 2500 fish are caught and left into stagnant waters. For the effectiveness, the fogging under the culverts was continued.
Due to heavy rains in December mosquitoes were increased very much. To control propagation of mosquitoes, municipality released another 2 lakhs Gambusia fish during February month in to stagnant water of the town. Result of this, mosquitoes’ propagation is slowly decreased.

IV) Outcome of activity

1. In the initial days of survey after leaving of Gambusia fish, 40% people have accepted that Mosquitoes have decreased.
2. After 6 months of the initiative, one N.G.O. by name Vruksha Yagnam have intimated that 90 % of mosquitoes have decreased compared to last year, in their locality near Chaudari tank.
3. The Dengue cases were reported only 15 during the present year compared to last year cases of more than 100. Thus saved the valuable lives and money of people.
4. The sales of mosquito coils, smoke balls ( oodu in telugu ) has been considerably decreased, as is reported by a shop owner. Thus it has decreased the pollution. It is also evident from the decrement of sales of Mosquito bats compared to last year.
5. If this initiated would not have taken, there would have been more mosquitoes, due to heavy rainfall and extended rainfall.

V)Personal Experience

While sitting on the front open space of my quarter provided by office, I use to kill at least 50 Mosquitoes with electric mosquito bat.
Soon after the initiative, I could not see even 2 to 3 mosquitoes at same place. I experienced in the same way in office building also.
In some places mosquitoes were prevailing as the breading centers were different Three advantages of fish:
Gambusia is a very small fish and it do not grow larger and heavier. It moves in the Corners of the water bodies, where Mosquitoes usually live. It is a fresh water fish but live in dirty water without inconvenience. It takes the larva of mosquitoes as food, this do not allow mosquitoes to bread. It saves valuable resources, as the cost of catching takes only a few amount.

VI)Lesson I learnt
1. Some people even caught this tiny fish and caused decrement, there by allowed increment of mosquitoes at later stage. I would have arranged boards not allowing the fishing on the other side of the tanks.
2. Staff members, who did not recognize the importance have failed to integrate other approaches and allowed mosquitoes to bread to certain extent.
3. Leaving of Gambusia is a continuous process to control the mosquitoes.

VII)Scope for integrated biological activity
In addition to the leaving of Gambusia fish, there are other two activities are as follows:
a) The lemon grass smell does not allow the mosquitoes to move near those places. It is told by some persons that Paris is a mosquito free city, as it is with presence of large lemon grass gardens. Even in our places, where there is scope for breading of mosquitoes we can take-up lemon grass gardens.
b) It is told by old persons of our village is that a fly (Thuniga in telugu, Thummiska in Nalgonda Dist., and Booga in Adilabad Dist.) can eat away the mosquitoes. My experience at Comport Yard of Suryapet reveals that there was huge garbage and stagnant water present at same place. But there were not even single mosquito because the flies are present. At one point of time, the flies were absent and I could not stay in compost yard because of mosquito menace. The requirement for presence of flies is Greenery.
c) Frogs also eat away the larva of mosquitoes and helps the human kind but unfortunately the vehicular movement kills the frogs. It is told by Senior citizens that only after intensive hunting of frogs, the Mosquito born diseases have increased in our country.

VIII) Relation of Mosquitoes to climate change:

1) In presence of mosquitoes we use coils , smoke ,repellents, which causes large scale pollution.
2) Even we close doors by not allowing fresh cool air increases the consumption of electricity and causes pollution.
3) The mosquito born diseases increases the production of medicines and accelerates the journey there by causing pollution.
4) Most of people even in the winter turn on fans to avoid the mosquito biting this increases energy consumption also increase the pollution and global warming.
All the above activities increase the pollution there by increasing the global warming and climate change.

IX) Requirement of help of people
During the summer, mosquitoes are less and live in cool places. At this time it is easy to kill them with electric bat. People has to follow this and shall not store the water with passion. They also shall not through the garbage in the drains and open spaces, which allow the breading of Mosquitoes. All the water tanks and septic tanks shall be thoroughly closed. They shall not also allow water to stagnate.
